Abbey Museum
Together with the adjacent Abbey Church and the cloisters dating from around 1200, the Abbey Museum of the City of Aschaffenburg forms a unique ensemble. The atmosphere of these historic buildings brings to life the period of the monastic canons.
Splendour and Faith of the Middle Ages
The major works of the famous Abbey treasury and the Altarpiece of St. Magdalene from the workshop of Lucas Cranach the Elder are highlights in the permanent exhibition.
Art of the Middle Ages
The department of medieval art presents a group of outstanding pieces, including one of the oldest panel paintings in Germany as well as one of the most precious game boards from around 1300.
Renaissance Art
This great flourishing of art was due to Aschaffenburg Cardinal Albrecht of Brandenburg, who had his residence here for a while.
Sacred Art
Magnificent panel paintings, finely worked sculptures, liturgical objects, bells, and folk art are included in the collection of sacral art.
Archaeology
The collections comprise valuable finds from prehistory and the Roman period.
“Altar of Saint Magdalene”
The “Altar of Saint Magdalene”, made by the workshop of Lucas Cranach the Elder, is an immense altarpiece, which reflects the image of man during the transformation period of the Middle Ages to the Renaissance.
